- Abstract
- This thesis presents a planning and action project which adapted the missionary preaching tradition of the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle (known as the Paulists) to the setting of contemporary Roman Catholic parishes in the Washington, DC, area. Parish-based evangelization was shaped by contemporary Roman Catholic concepts of parish, lay ministry, and evangelization. The project consisted of 1) involving parishes, 2) forming lay evangelization committees, and 3) developing evangelization activities. This was done in four parishes in the Washington, DC area, between May 1988 and June 1989. Research showed that parishes became involved and people were reached by evangelization projects. Research did not show that these kinds of activities changed the religious behavior of active parishioners as a group.
