Abstract
  • The purpose is to support clergy involved in pastoral care and counseling for the ALS patient and caregiver. The project provides a picture of ALS so those who offer pastoral care and counseling will be better equipped to understand the effects of an ALS diagnosis. Using the phenomenological research method allowed the ALS patient and caregiver to share the experience of ALS. The author found four themes; control and choices, faith, family diagnosis, doing versus dying. In developing a pastoral care and counseling plan the author recommends the following: listen, do not push, listen, prayer, congregational support, listen.
