Abstract
  • This thesis is the result of reflection on three sources of experience: ministry at St. Francis Xavier Parish, LaGrange, Illinois, in behalf of the spiritual growth of its members; aspects of broader US culture reflected in St. Francis experience; the experience of the Church relative to parish ministry and spirituality. The mutual critical dialogue among the three sources resulted in recommendations for a renewed ministry to parishioners in behalf of spirituality. Two basic themes out of which the recommendations were generated were: 1) the image of the Church as a community of disciples, and 2) small faith communities. This renewal in a function of approaching parish ministry in all its aspects from within the horizon of spirituality--such that spiritual growth is envisioned as the clear reason and purpose for ministerial activity in all its forms.
