Abstract
  • The paper centers on the role theology plays in laypersons' use of faith translation, that is in the translating of everyday experiences into faith decisions. The author sought to use the theological criteria of experience, reason, scripture and tradition by studying Wingeier's 'Working Out Your Own Beliefs'. He taught how Douglas Wingeier, John Macquarrie and Donald Bloesch applied these same criteria to their theological studies. The different criteria that each theologian stressed was discussed with an adult class as they learned to accept or reject each criteria and to follow their own theological guideline in faith translation. This approach allowed the class to discover different criteria and ways of viewing a problem and resulted in the development of other adult classes.
