  • This study addresses how to change the model of a traditional, mainline church toward a new model of church called a confessional, narrative community of memory. The project constructs narrative techniques in preaching and small groups to allow individuals to understand their lives in terms of character, plot, setting, and tone. The experiment took place in a medium sized United Methodist Church in Ohio. The study employed the one-group, pre-test/post-test design utilizing a questionnaire designed by the researcher. The results were inconclusive. Statistically significant movement occurred in only a small percentage of questions after exposure to narrative techniques.
