  • The goal of the project is twofold: first, to inform the preacher concerning the psyche of the Caribbean people, specifically of the lingering psycho-social effects of colonialism, as a means of understanding why Caribbean people do what they do; and second, to instruct preachers on how to use context, as a guide to content, for effective preaching in the Caribbean. This project consists of academic research coupled with qualitative research data collected from workshops and interviews with pastoral care professionals from the Caribbean. Because there was insufficient scholarship available to conclusively make a direct link between slavery and the current subsequent behavior of Caribbean people, the author subsequently resorted to describing the oppression and its root causes, as it relates to slavery and colonialism and its resulting effects on the progeny of the slaves in the Caribbean. In order to effectively preach in the Caribbean, the preacher must have a solid understanding of oppression and its effect on the lives of the people.
