- Abstract
- This project explores the current movement in the evangelical community in the United States toward unity. A review of recent literature reveals the evaluation of the Prayer Summit movement, city-wide crusades and other efforts to come together. The acceptance of diversity and its relation to changes in our society is also discussed. Several key passages in the Bible are examined to determine the key principles for unity to occur among believers and the place diversity has in that experience. A survey was conducted of pastors in the writer's local community to identify the current perspective of unity with diversity. Basic beliefs are delineated that are viewed as essential for unity as well as a clarification of the issues that are understood as acceptable areas of diversity in the Body of Christ. The paper concludes with a summary of the biblical principles of unity and some specific guidelines for the Christian community as it seeks unity with diversity, not only for the local church but for the church universal.
