Abstract
  • The prayers of Great Thanksgiving (eucharistic prayers) usually have limited options for harmonizing with the scripture texts used in the worship service. The new 'United Methodist Hymnal: Book of United Methodist Worship' contains services or word and table that allow for the celebrant to create varieties in the prayer. This project contains 26 eucharistic prayers based on the Common Lectionary rather than the season. The project also examines the history of the prayer, Wesley's approach to the sacrament, and how the 1988 United Methodist liturgy developed. This project demonstrates that tradition and innovation can work together for the worship of God.
