- Abstract
- How can pastors awaken those desires of the heart that were promised to Christians in the New Covenant for the purposes of spiritual formation? The author explores several roadblocks to spiritual formation such as functional Deism, family of origin issues, Old Covenant ministry practices, and the basic principles of the world, in an attempt to discover an effective way to deal with thsoe obstacles. He presents a theological backdrop for pastoral ministry that places relationship with God at the heart of the narrative, reviews writings of Gregory of Nyssa, Bernard of Clarvaux, Jonathan Edwards, and surveys germane material from neurobiology and attachmetn theorists. He conducted qualitative research interviews of 13 pastors in the Capital District of New York State to ascertain how they motivate people for formation into the likeness of Christ.
