Abstract
  • The purpose of this thesis project is to explore how involvement in the creative process of experimenting with visual arts and critical listening to music can exercise and amplify the imagination of the preacher, resulting in a more animated aurality of preaching, and narrative preaching in particular. The thesis project workshop was designed, using music listening exercises along with the kinetic experience of creating visual art, to determine if the imagination can be stimulated to craft more vibrant sermons in a persuasive rhetoric of pathos. Quantitative research evaluation, experienced by evaluating the preaching in the workshop and further in participant interviews, revealed that this workshop stimulated the preachers to use musical language and vivid imagery, supporting the purpose of the thesis. It would appear that similar workshops might be very helpful for use in the preparation of seminary students of homiletics, or an ongoing gathering of clergy colleagues. The thesis concludes with suggestions for further exercises by which the preacher can begin to form a habitus of preparing to preach with an intention of stimulating the imagination for a more animated aurality.
