Abstract
  • This project addresses the lack of understanding between Christian congregations and Twelve Step-based spiritual recovery programs. It further encourages ministers to develop a type of 'recovery hermeneutics' in preaching. The author, calling upon her own years of experience with and research in Twelve Step spirituality, as well as the work of historians and writers in the field, traces the origins of Alcoholics Anonymous in the Oxford Group and the New Testament teachings which were formative in Twelve Step principles and practice. She discusses the controversy over the 'God as you understand him' concept. Included are preaching themes and sample sermons.
