Abstract
  • The role of the state overseer within the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) is examined in relation to the biblical and historical role of the bishop. An analysis of historical development of the office and present problems is presented from interviews. Texts from the New Testament as well as the writings of Irenaeus are offered to develop an historical model. The proposed model of leadership is intended to have more emphasis upon ministry than administration in a return to the teaching role of the bishop/overseer. This is demonstrated to be faithful to historic Christianity as well as contemporary Pentecostal theology.
