  • The author believes that a more intentional nurture of personal religious experience by mainline churches will increase service to the world. A theoretical chapter argues that religious experiences are unique and qualitatively different from natural experiences without, on the opposite extreme, becoming irrelevant magical supernatural events. Research, by test and interview, explored the relationship between religious experience and service. Results: People from mainline churches claimed religious experiences that associate with natural reality and extend service that is humanistic and personal in orientation. Conservative evangelical church members describe experiences unrelated to natural reality, accompanied by impersonal other-worldly outreach efforts.
