Abstract
  • The project demonstrates that spiritual formation, based on a prayerful study of Biblical personalities, provides necessary and adequate preparation for lay ministry. The author helps prepare course material, prepares several instructors to teach the course, teaches two semesters of the program and evaluates it afterwards. Through the use of personal interviews, conversations, and questionnaires, he discovers that the participants feel they have grown in their qualifications for ministry. They acknowledge that the program helps them to pray more sincerely, to deal constructively with conflict and to develop leadership skills for ministry. The bishop of the diocese of Corpus Christi, pastors of the parishes of the participants and staff members of the Pastoral Institute are very positive in their evaluation of the program.
