  • This project explores worship reform in the Presbyterian Church (USA) that seeks to maintain theological and liturgical integrity of the Reformed tradition and yet incorporates liturgical practices from other Christian traditions. The project analyzes congregational innovations that blend what is central to Reformed worship with liturgical styles from the 'creative,' 'praise and worship,' and 'high liturgical' traditions, using a participant-observer study method. The underlying theological and liturgical question raised by each blended liturgy centers around the Reformed notion of 'freedom in form.' How much freedom is allowable? How much form is required? Each service answers this question differently.
