  • This project proposes that African American churches on the West Side of Chicago, Illinois, can play a vital role in improving the health status of their congregation members, families, and communities. The project suggests that churches in partnership with health care organizations can be instruments of change. The project presents data on the health of African Americans, forms an ecumenical clergy health council, determines the theological foundation, creates congregational health ministries, assesses each congregation's health status, and implements health education classes. Development and expansion of existing congregational health ministries lead to favorable outcomes for members, families, and communities.
