Abstract
  • The purpose of the project was to effect change in the membership policy of the First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The author theorized that an in-depth study of the historical, exegetical and theological bases for Christian baptism would foster attitudinal changes among members of this congregation toward accepting as members candidates who had been immersed as believers in non-Baptist churches. Surveys taken prior to and following the study series indicated attitudinal changes which enhanced the possibility of a major policy change. The congregation voted three years later to implement such a change in its membership policy.
