Abstract
  • Modern media fills parishioners' lives with images, stories, and voices. How can preaching help parishioners identify God's voice in the middle of the many voices that fill their lives? Part of the answer lies in plotted sermons' effectiveness in developing biblical aural fluency--the ability to recognize God's voice in everyday life. Through exploration of contemporary homiletical literature, conversations with parishioners, and reflection on preaching in two different ministry settings, the author explored preaching that effectively communicates with a variety of ages and backgrounds, brings biblical characters alive, and helps connect the listeners with those who speak God's speech in the Bible.
