Abstract
  • Presbyterian tradition has interpreted its faith primarily through Scripture, tradition, and reason. What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience. This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience. Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition. Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth. The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship. Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4. Overall, the conclusions drawn value the learning experience of the project as a success for both the author and the class participants.
