  • The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America entered into full communion with five denominations between 1998 and 2001. The author studied what parish practices encourage an ecumenical understanding of the faith. A survey was used to gather data from full communion settings. The author visited three of these ministry settings, conducted interviews and used case studies to determine which practices promote ecumenical understanding. Friendship among local pastors, and ecumenical leadership among judicatory officials are formative. Pastoral leadership and vision builds a climate of trust for growing together while sharing common worship, Christian education and hospitality affirms unity and builds ecumenical understanding.
