Abstract
  • This project develops a handbook of tasks, behaviors, and expectations, arranged chronologically from the time of a spouse's impending or actual death into the second year of bereavement. Accompanying experiences, feelings, and reactions are described and related to the general literature and theory of grief. Previous research, interviews, and life experiences, affirm that bereaved men have been expected to 'be strong' and to be concerned for others more than themselves. Their styles of griefwork indicate that they prefer to act rather than to talk or express feelings. This handbook offers an alternative approach to free men from the strictures of society.
