Abstract

The author researched an Afro-centric approach to pastoral care in long-term care facilities. Drawing from ministry experiences in a historically African-American long-term care facility, the author established that there are cultural themes unique to African Americans and established the merits of being culturally sensitive to the recipient of care. Utilizing historical data regarding the African American religious experience, the author suggests critical cultural/religious models upon which to do a ministry of pastoral care. The author notes that such a focus brings completeness to the dialogue of diversity in healthcare and provides appropriate culture-specific pastoral care.
