Abstract
  • The purpose of this ministry research project was to develop a program of clinical pastoral training designed to equip deacons for more effective hospital ministry. A phone interview with fifty of the most recently hospitalized church members revealed a need for deacon visitation. A survey of the deacons indicated that a majority desired to be better equipped for hospital visitation. The training utilized the clinical pastoral education model including: seminars, case conferences, interpersonal relationship groups, and personal supervision. Testing and evaluations revealed increases in the participants' self-understanding, confidence, and basic caring skills useful in hospital ministry.
