Abstract
  • The way in which material is indexed will determine in part how the material is used. This dissertation traces the tradition of hymns and hymnals, biblically and historically, then, in its project, proposes new indices for any hymnal, to aid in bringing the tradition of hymns to life in the local church. The project is based on The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990). A chronology of both texts and tunes is offered, with a historical narrative index describing the historical and theological movements in hymnody. Other indices include an index suggesting alternative liturgical uses, a reworked index of musical sources, and others.
