Abstract

With the increase in the elderly population, today's church faces great opportunities and challenges in meeting the needs of this demographic. In the Korean-American community, as illustrated by the situation in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the church may be failing to develop and implement intentional ministries toward the elderly. Among numerous Korean churches in the area (over one-hundred local congregations), only three churches have programmatic ministries for seniors. The following dissertation first examines the Bible for a proper understanding of the place of seniors in the church. On the basis of this biblical understanding of the elderly, three of the more successful senior ministry programs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area are studied. Various survey data are presented and analyzed. The dissertation then compares the ministries among the three programs and, more importantly, to the biblical view of the elderly. Finally, in view of biblical teaching and the analysis of the ministries, the dissertations proposes a model for effective ministry to senior adults in the Korean-American church.
