  • The project examined elements of the national missions program in the United States which provide the best opportunity for starting and growing new congregations to be self-supporting within five years. The study utilized a case study approach describing the church planting programs of five similarly sized denominations, the statistical records for new congregations started in 1993 and 1994, and interviews with church planters, denominational leaders, and outside consultants. The study show evidence of strong correlation between success in self-support and the funding formulas used to start new churches, the models used to start new congregations, and the use of assessment centers to evaluate and select church planters.
