Abstract
  • This project proposes that group spiritual direction helps the healing process of people diagnosed with mild to moderate depression. In group spiritual direction a group leader enables participants to provide spiritual guidance and care for one another. The project coaches group members in using cognitive therapy--a preferred treatment for depressed persons in which change is accomplished through adult learning--to address spiritual needs of the member whose difficulties are the focus of any given session. The project facilitates a model of adult learning, known as Transformative Learning, through practice of reflection. This qualitative and quantitative research demonstrates that group spiritual direction improves the mood of clients who are mildly to moderately depressed.
