- Abstract
- Elderly homebound individuals are confronted with significant and life-changing events that cause elevated levels of despair at the end of life. Loneliness, the loss of independence, grief as a result of the loss of a spouse or loved one, and the like may cause elderly homebound individuals to become consumed by substantial maladies that require mindful attention by those who are given to care for their souls. Effective pastoral care to the aged must be intentional and well informed in order to properly understand the condition of the soul and apply the comfort of the Gospel. This project used three uniquely developed directional visitation methodologies in order to discover pressing spiritual maladies and to apply God’s Word through pastoral care. The first two methodologies, a spiritual needs assessment inventory and a self-narrative tool, were used primarily for the discovery of the essential spiritual needs within those studied for this project. The Bible study was developed in two parts. The first Bible study was based on Luther’s theology of the cross which includes exploration of human suffering and vocation. The second Bible study was individually tailored to the specific spiritual needs discovered within the spiritual needs assessment and self-narrative portions of the experiment. Three elderly homebound subjects were visited six different times (two visitations per methodology) for this study. Results indicated that directional methodologies for spiritual needs discovery and the application of pastoral care are effective and commendable.
