  • Children need a foundation in the Christian faith from earliest childhood in order to gain the most benefit from the confirmation experience that is the common practice in United Methodism. The author studied developmental theorists and James Fowler's stages of faith. She then developed a chart that correlated the accepted stages of physical, cognitive, and emotional development with Fowler's stages of faith. Teaching suggestions on the resulting chart enabled adults, utilizing programs and curricula already in place, to lead the children involved in the practicum to experience God in ways that would help to build a foundation for Christian faith development.
