Abstract
  • This project focuses on the impact of Hurricane Ivan on the Westport community in Jamaica, the suffering that followed, and the residents' fear that God had abandoned them. The project, carried out with ten residents of the Westport community, explores the relationship of God to suffering. Qualitative research methods help to understand the religious beliefs of respondents, disaster preparedness, and the effect the hurricane had on residents. The project's main objective was to ascertain how prepared members of the Westport community were for a disaster and to design a disaster preparedness program that would provide for pastoral care to residents of the Westport community.
