Abstract
  • The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) needs support at all levels of the church's ministry. This study assesses personal and professional needs of ministers in the Christian Church and critically examines and analyzes existing clergy support systems at local, regional and denominational levels. Methodology includes research of literature in the field, survey of methods of other denominations in assessing clergy needs; research and reflection upon clergy support systems within the Christian Church (Disciples). From a dozen clergy support systems within the church, the author determined that the three most effective are: peer/colleague support groups, local congregations' pastoral relations committees, and the church's pension fund. Mainline Protestant denominations are woefully inadequate in support of their ordained ministers.
