Abstract
  • The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate a leadership training process to determine the efficacy of the transformational leadership model to train lay leadership in a local church setting. The study design consisted of an independent assessment of observed leadership behaviors before and after implementation of the training program. Ten lay leaders from Mebane Presbyterian Church in Mebane, North Carolina were evaluated by peers and followers using the Mind Garden online multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ 5X). The study participants underwent an intervention using biblical materials and action steps from Bass and Avolio's Leader's Notebook. The post-intervention assessment showed improvement in four of the five categories tested, providing positive indications as to the appropriateness and effectiveness of the transformational leadership model for training lay leaders in a local church setting.
