- The project, “The Life of Jesus: A Program of Christian Education for the Retarded Adult,” was designed to test a primary purpose and two secondary purposes: A. Primary Purpose: That mildly to moderately retarded adults can show positive intellectual, emotional, and social growth in functioning in both individual and interpersonal relationships when participating in and completing the course of study. B. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group or retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. C. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group of retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. In the early 1960’s, the Pleasant Hill United Methodist in Owings Mills, Maryland, began a social ministry with a group of retarded male adults at a nearby state institution, The Rosewood Center for the mentally handicapped [sic]. The program originally centered on a once-a-month visit to the institution with games, an occasional film, fellowship, and refreshments. Participation in the leadership of this specialized ministry involved about six or seven members of the congregation.
