The key researchable question was as follows: Will a series of third person narrative sermons organized according to Eugene Lowry's 'homiletical plot' motivate a congregation in a separationist theological tradition to engage in a specific friendship evangelism behavior? The behavioral change targeted in this thesis was measured by two questionnaires distributed after two 'Friendship Sunday' worship services to which members of the local congregation had been encouraged to invite their 'seeker' friends. The only difference between the first Sunday and the second was the treatment, the (ten) sermons. The measure of success was a 10 percent increase in the number of church members who invited a 'seeker.' By that measure the project failed. The overall conclusion was that narrative preaching is a necessary, but not sufficient, part of any strategy for producing behavioral change in a church.
