  • The thesis argues that although women played insignificant roles in traditional Meru society, Christian evangelization transformed the Meru woman, giving her a position of social prominence that has helped convert most Meru people to Christianity in the eighty years of Christian presence since 1909. The thesis employs a methodology of oral history using as informants indigenous Methodist women. It contains stories of Meru women who have borne the gospel to homes, families, villages, schools, and helped found churches and Christian movements. It concludes that African women are central witnesses to the gospel.
