Abstract
  • This project investigates treatment of domestic violence in premarital counseling by Protestant clergy in Massachusetts, finding in the literature and in survey research that a majority of clergy do not include or know how to facilitate informed discussion about domestic violence. Women clergy are more likely to address the issue because of specialized training in graduate courses, conferences, workshops, or seminars on domestic violence. The project recommends that seminary and denominational training should include courses that would enable all clergy to educate premarital couples about domestic abuse.
