- Abstract
- Many African-American women experience symptoms of depression when confronted with multiple roles and responsibilities, issues of racism, sexism and classism, and stereotypes about counseling. This project set forth an effective pastoral couseling method to address and decrease depressive symptoms. African-American women's spirituality, and Womanist theology provided the framework for this process. Biblical stories and cognitive/behavioral techniques, integrated with intentionally 'joining' the client, informed the pastoral counseling sessions. Research involved Aaron Beck's Depression inventory as a pre- and post-indicator of depressive symptoms, with five women participating in ifive counseling sessions. In all cases the post test showed that depressive symptoms decreased, and the women made progress in giving voice to their experiences through the pastoral counseling process.
