Abstract
  • This work deals with the problem of clergy burnout and depression as viewed from the personal experience of the author. Beginning at the point when professional intervention is sought, the author reviews ten years of pastoral activities, expectations, and ultimate feelings of total frustration that eventually led back to a healthy personal and ministerial life. The primary thrust in this work is the need for emotional/psychological self-knowledge as a gauge of personality characteristics. Once identified and integrated into the vocational demands, one becomes more effective at choosing or amending those ministerial tasks that are better suited for the personality of the individual pastor. Such exploration should bear fruit in more ministerial tasks being performed for the proper reason, thereby producing a greater degree of self-satisfaction, reduced stress, and vocational stability.
