- Believer baptism by immersion may be considered a deterrent to church growth and an irritant to ecumenism. Some 'moderate' Baptist churches have abandoned it as an absolute requirement for church membership. Theoretical considerations (biblical, theological, ecumenical) underpin such abandonment. Yet practical considerations (psychological, sociological, and ecclesial) contend even more compellingly for retention. This project champions immersion as an almost absolute requirement for membership in Baptist churches. The project supports this thesis through a summary of recent church growth research and by modeling (1) another approach to ecumenism and (2) the elevation of baptism to prominence in church life.
