  • This project explores a theory of hermeneutical pastoral counseling in a clinical setting. It was based on the writings of Gerkin, McDargh, Crossan, and Malan. The thrust of the theory was the formation of a context out of which idolatrous myths could be identified, examined, and addressed in the therapeutic relationship to discern the consequences that might exist between those idolatrous myths and the problems in the life of the client. A case study was the second part of the project. The problems the client brought to the therapy were reality-tested within the working theory base and traced to their sources in the family of origin. The evaluation involved verbatim accounts of the client growth at the termination of the therapy based on criteria set forth within the theory base.
