Abstract
  • After briefly surveying the historical development of Baptist newspapers, particularly Georgia's The Christian Index, the project considers the strengths and weaknesses of the publication, based on a random survey of current subscribers. The priorities of the newspaper's various roles were explored by examining polls of Baptist editors and the Index's board of directors. A profile analysis of the newspaper's constituency showed an alarming absence of young readers, posing a threat to The Index's future vitality and influence. Results of the research call for specific changes in the format and contents of the paper in order to fulfill its various roles and to reach a wider and younger constituency.
