Abstract
  • The perceptions and skills enabling missionaries to reach overseas cultures must be learned and applied by churches around Baltimore. Two Southern Baptist churches recently gained new awareness of how to penetrate subcultures around them. A five-session series introduced both laity and clergy to demographics, group identity concepts, focus community profiles, spiritual gifts, core church competencies, and interviews with experienced community penetration practitioners. Participants' reactions and churches' interest in such training varied widely. Some feel that tracking trends to adjust outreach is a novel but needless exercise. Most found these skills supporting mission strategy to be very practical.
