Abstract

The purpose of this project is to train men who sense a call from God to preach. The people who will find this project most beneficial will be young men in ministry who have not been able to attend a Christian college or seminary, men who are called to preach later in life, bi-vocational pastors, and laymen who have opportunity to preach occasionally. A second group of people who will benefit is those to whom these men minister on a regular basis. The project was accomplished by contracting with a group of about ten interested men to meet once a week over a period of ten weeks for two-hour sessions. These men demonstrated their understanding of the preaching process by learning to use the basic tools of Bible study; by learning basic hermeneutical principles to safeguard against heretical ideas; by doing research to prepare a Bible message; by gathering illustrations; by developing a message with an introduction, body, illustrations, conclusion, and invitation; by learning the principles of sermon delivery; by delivering a Bible message in class; by evaluating the message of others; and by establishing a file system for retaining sermon material.
