Abstract
  • This project investigates and evaluates the counseling needs of Appalachians and the difficulties in meeting those needs, in order to assess whether local churches, pastors, and pastoral counselors working in joint ministry might increase the availability and use of counseling resources. The project conducts interviews with 15 pastors in two focus groups and distributes a questionnaire completed by 426 laypersons. Both pastors and laypersons indicate a lack of professional counseling resources, less than optimum use of existing resources, and need for more education in and about professional counseling.
