Abstract
  • The author contends that it is possible to reverse the discouraging projections about the number of declining and closing Mainline Protestant congregations in the U.S. in the next fifteen years by restarting struggling local churches. The three-year research focuses on the restarting experience of the Wellfleet United Methodist Church in Massachusetts, which employed strategies from both experiences, the planting of new churches and the turning around of troubled congregations. The research describes the good, the bad, and the ugly of changing course in people's spiritual journeys and congregational lives. It also demonstrates that in the right circumstances, it is possible to lead troubled churches toward new life, no matter how mistaken or near to death they appear to be.
