- Abstract
- This project consisted of two parts: (1) the writing of a fifty-page study guide to the teachings of the seventh-century theologian St. Maximus the Confessor on the Orthodox doctrine of theosis (deification) and (2) the evaluation of this guide in two different modalities - as a five-week group course with a designated leader and as an individual study. The evaluative instruments showed that both intellectual learning and personal transformation took place in both settings, demonstrating that the teachings of St. Maximus, though difficult, can be an effective tool for teaching the ancient doctrine of theosis to contemporary Christians.
