Abstract

This project-thesis created and tested a model for lay participation in developing liturgies. The pastor met with fifteen parishioners during the season of Lent in order to prepare liturgies for the Second Sunday in Easter, Ascension Sunday, and Pentecost Sunday. The study discusses what worked and what did not work and then proposes a new model. What began as a study of lay participation in liturgy planning, ended up with some useful insights into the role of the pastor in the congregation. A number of issues relating to pastoral function and identity as well as the priesthood of believers are raised in the final chapter. In a church where there is a high degree of lay involvement, what is the unique role of the ordained minister? which roles can be shared in liturgical ministry and which roles cannot be shared?
