Abstract
  • The study affirms that loneliness and alienation are intense, widespread, prominent, and troublesome in contemporary American and western society, including the church and its ministry. Indeed, pastors may be especially lonely. Relevant insights from the research of this project are used to develop a brief outline of a theory and practice of the art of friendship in ministry. Biblically, theologically, and psychologically, the importance of friendship in dealing with loneliness and alienation, in enhancing human life and well-being, and in establishing needed community is shown and its importance for ministry demonstrated.
