  • This thesis proposes that friendship manifests the relationship to which God calls us. Friendship is a minor theme in Scripture and Christian history. Jesus moves all disciples into friendship in the eschatological advance from servanthood. The challenge is to reclaim friendship as a symbol of salvation. In the church's primary activity, its worship, commitment to friendship can satisfy people's need for intimacy and encourage a climate of hospitality. Research shows friendship is a theological expectation in Christian community. Interventions indicate friendship is possible as a value and as a reality among a congregation of worshippers.
