Abstract
  • The understanding and practice of spiritual leadership is largely absent within the Episcopal Church, and the ability to lead spiritually must be restored for healthy functioning of the Church. A questionnaire was administered to ascertain how lay and clergy leaders understand spiritual leadership. A theology of spiritual leadership is presented, discussing the scriptural and historical roots of spiritual leadership and describing the spiritual leader in terms of servanthood, empowerment, discernment, spiritual experience, prayer, and sanctification. A proposal for nurturing spiritual leadership in the Episcopal Church is presented in terms of the leadership style of Jesus.
